Libyan Society for Birds Participates in Regional Workshop on Combating the Illegal Killing of Birds (IKB)
The Libyan Society for Birds (LSB) participated in a regional workshop on experience-sharing to combat the Illegal Killing of Birds (IKB), held in Tunis, Tunisia, from 16 to 18 October 2026. The workshop was organised by the Association Les Amis des Oiseaux (AAO) in Tunisia and the Bird Protection and Study Society of Serbia (BPSSS), as part of the PROZHUM projects.
The workshop brought together bird conservation organisations and associations from seven countries: Libya, Tunisia, Serbia, Algeria, Morocco, Lebanon, and Türkiye. Its main objective was to exchange national experiences in monitoring and addressing the illegal killing of birds.
During the first two days, participating organisations delivered presentations on their experiences in monitoring illegal killing, the challenges they encounter, and the measures being undertaken to tackle these practices.
Libya was represented by the Libyan Society for Birds, with Mr Alaa Nwige delivering a presentation on the Society’s experience in monitoring the illegal killing of birds, the legislation governing bird protection in Libya, and its conservation efforts. These included public awareness campaigns, workshops and educational activities, and engagement with relevant authorities to strengthen bird protection measures.
On the third day, participants took part in field visits to Sebkhet Soliman and Sebkhet Korba in Tunisia. The activities included monitoring waterbirds at both sites and documenting evidence of illegal bird-killing activities.
This participation provided a valuable opportunity to exchange expertise with regional organisations, learn from different national experiences, and explore ways to improve monitoring and documentation methods. It also reinforced the importance of cooperation between civil society organisations and relevant authorities in combating the illegal killing of birds and protecting biodiversity across the Mediterranean region.
