Libyan Society for Birds Participates in Stakeholder Consultation Workshops on the Management Plans for Farwa and Ain Al-Ghazala Protected Areas.

The Libyan Society for Birds (LSB) participated in the second round of stakeholder consultation workshops organized by Libya’s Ministry of Environment to present and discuss the proposed management plans for the country’s coastal and marine protected areas. The workshops were held at the Ministry’s headquarters in Tripoli on 1–2 July 2026.

The first day focused on the proposed management plan for the Farwa Protected Area, while the second day was dedicated to the Ain Al-Ghazala Protected Area. These workshops form part of the Support for the Management and Expansion of Marine Protected Areas in Libya (CP 3.1) project, implemented during the 2022–2027 period.

The Society’s participation reflects its continued commitment to conserving biodiversity, birds, and their natural habitats, particularly within ecologically important coastal and wetland ecosystems. It also underscores the Society’s role in contributing scientific and technical expertise to the development of effective and sustainable management strategies for Libya’s protected areas.

The workshops included presentations on the outcomes of previous stakeholder consultations, followed by discussions of the preliminary management plans. Representatives from government institutions, academic and research organizations, environmental experts, and civil society organizations took part in the sessions, exchanging views and recommendations to help refine the final management plans.

The project is implemented under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with WWF North Africa (WWF NA), the Regional Activity Centre for Specially Protected Areas (SPA/RAC), and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
