Celebrating World Curlew Day through Scientific and Awareness Activities in Libya.
The Libyan Society for Birds, in partnership with the Zoology Department at the University of Tripoli, marked World Curlew Day on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, in a seminar room at the Zoology Department.
World Curlew Day is held every year on April 21. It was launched in 2017 by Curlew Action to raise awareness about the threats facing curlew species. These threats have led to major declines in their global populations, including the official extinction of one species in 2025—the Slender-billed Curlew (Numenius tenuirostris).
The event featured three main talks:
• Bird Migration – Alaa Nweiji.
• Illegal Killing of Birds – Laura Dami (Coordinator of the Mediterranean Waterbird Network).
• Curlews: From Diversity to the Risk of Extinction – Abdelnasser Eisa.
The event also included engaging scientific discussions among participants, focusing on the current status of curlew species in Libya. These discussions led to several important recommendations aimed at strengthening conservation efforts and protecting these species.
This event is part of ongoing efforts to promote environmental awareness and encourage community involvement in biodiversity conservation, especially for migratory birds passing through Libya along major global flyways, as well as, to highlight the impact of illegal killing of birds in the region.
