Saturday, 5 September 2026, marks International Vulture Awareness Day, observed annually on the first Saturday of September. The day aims to raise awareness of the importance of vultures, highlight their vital role in ecosystems, and draw attention to the threats facing these remarkable birds worldwide.

Vultures play an essential ecological role as some of nature’s most important scavengers. By feeding on the carcasses and remains of dead animals, they help remove organic waste from the environment, reduce the accumulation of animal remains, and contribute to limiting the potential spread of certain pathogens. In doing so, vultures help maintain ecological balance and support the health and functioning of natural ecosystems.

On this occasion, the Libyan Society for Birds (LSB) extends its appreciation and thanks to everyone working to protect vultures and conserve their habitats, particularly in light of the increasing threats they face, including habitat loss, urban expansion, human disturbance, poisoning, hunting, and direct persecution.

In Libya, the Society draws particular attention to the conservation status of the Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus). This species was formerly observed in several parts of the country, including the Jabal Nafusa and Jebel Akhdar regions. Today, however, it has become extremely rare, highlighting the urgent need for greater attention to its conservation, as well as systematic monitoring of its populations and habitats.

Four vulture species are currently included among the birds recorded in Libya:

• Egyptian Vulture — Neophron percnopterus
• Griffon Vulture — Gyps fulvus
• Rüppell’s Griffon Vulture — Gyps rueppelli
• Lappet-faced Vulture — Torgos tracheliotos

International Vulture Awareness Day provides an important opportunity to emphasize that protecting vultures is not simply about conserving individual species. It also means protecting the wider ecosystems on which they depend, including their habitats, feeding areas, and nesting sites, while reducing sources of unnatural mortality.

The Libyan Society for Birds hopes that this day will contribute to greater public awareness of the ecological importance of vultures and encourage further scientific and field-based efforts to monitor and conserve these birds, helping to ensure their continued survival and the vital ecological services they provide.

Vultures are more than scavenging birds. They are an essential component of nature and play a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems.
