Training Tawergha Scout Group Members in Bird Identification and Monitoring as Part of the Engaging the Local Community in the Restoration of Tawergha Wetland (PROZHUM).

As part of the activities of the Engaging the Local Community in the Restoration of Tawergha Wetland (PROZHUM), implemented by the Libyan Society for Birds (LSB) in cooperation with the Tawergha Municipal Branch Council, a training programme was organised on Saturday, 27 June 2026, for a number of members of the Tawergha Scout Group. The training aimed to develop their skills in bird identification and monitoring and to strengthen their involvement in biodiversity conservation efforts in the area.

The training introduced participants to the importance of birds as biological indicators of ecosystem health and covered the basic principles of bird identification through the observation of morphological characteristics, behaviour, and vocalisations. Participants were also introduced to key bird-monitoring techniques and methods for documenting field observations.

The programme also highlighted the importance of local community participation, particularly the involvement of young people, in environmental monitoring and biodiversity data collection. Such engagement can contribute to supporting wetland conservation activities and promoting the sustainable management of these important ecosystems.

The training received strong engagement from the Scout Group members, who demonstrated considerable interest in birds and expressed their willingness to participate in future environmental activities and programmes.

At the conclusion of the programme, the Libyan Society for Birds emphasised the importance of building young people’s capacities and engaging them in environmental monitoring initiatives, recognising them as key partners in protecting natural resources and conserving biodiversity in Tawergha.
