Workshop Celebrating the 60th International Waterbird Census (IWC60) on the Sidelines of AEWA MOP9.

On Thursday, 13 November 2025, the Libyan Society for Birds participated in a workshop organized by Wetlands International on the sidelines of the 9th Meeting of the Parties to the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA MOP9), held in Bonn, Germany, from 9 to 14 November 2025.

The workshop was part of the celebrations marking 60 years of the International Waterbird Census (IWC60), which will take place in January 2026. The IWC is one of the world’s leading monitoring programmes supporting efforts to conserve waterbirds and their natural habitats.

The event highlighted the crucial role of the IWC in strengthening waterbird monitoring across the three main flyways of the Agreement Area, and emphasized the importance of international partnerships, data exchange, and collaborative efforts to ensure long-term conservation of key habitats.

Prof. Khaled Etayeb, President of the Libyan Society for Birds, delivered a presentation showcasing the Society’s contribution to the winter waterbird census (IWC) in Libya. He also discussed the significance of the Society’s membership in the Mediterranean Waterbirds Network (MWN) and its role in supporting capacity-building and partnership development in waterbird monitoring and conservation.
