World Migratory Bird Day 2020 Celebration at the University of Tripoli.

With the grace of God, on Wednesday, 10 October 2020, a celebration was held for World Migratory Bird Day, which is observed twice a year (9 May and 10 October). The event was organized by the Libyan Society for Birds in collaboration with the Department of Zoology – Faculty of Science, University of Tripoli, the Libyan Association of Friends of Traditional Hunting, and the General Environmental Authority, under this year’s theme: “Birds Connect Our World.”

The program included an introduction to World Migratory Bird Day, a presentation on the study and census of wintering waterbirds in Libya, as well as a presentation on the Libyan Society of Artisanal Fishery Friends and the Marine Biodiversity Monitoring Network. The celebration concluded with the announcement of the formation of the Libyan Nature Associations Union.

The Society extends its thanks to all who contributed to the success of this event and to the supporters of bird and wetland studies in Libya, especially:

The World Wetlands Day 2020 Celebration.

In collaboration with the Tajoura branch of the General Environment Authority and the Libyan Society for Birds, a celebration was held on Thursday, 6 February 2020 at the Tajoura Cultural Center to mark World Wetlands Day. This event is part of the annual activities commemorating this day, observed on 2 February each year, and the theme for 2020 was: “Wetlands and Biodiversity.”

The program included speeches by the Head of the Authority’s Tajoura Branch, the President of the Libyan Society for Birds, the Head of the Marine Biology Department at the Authority, and the Head of the Media Department at the Tajoura Branch. Following the speeches, a lecture was presented on migratory birds and their ecological importance. The second part of the event involved a field visit to the Tajoura Port, where participants observed birds and identified the species present.

The Libyan Society for Birds extends its sincere thanks to all who contributed to the success of this event, including Authority staff and Society members. Special appreciation is also given to the Tajoura Cultural Center and the Mediterranean Waterbirds Network for their support and contributions.

Winter Waterbird Census in Libya – 2020.

The Winter Migratory Waterbird Census in Libya commenced on Thursday, 9 January 2020, under the supervision of the Libyan Society for Birds, in collaboration with the General Environmental Authority and the Bado Society for the protection of marine and terrestrial life in Zuwara. This year’s survey covered most areas from Abokammash in the west to Wadi Kaam Dam in the east, excluding certain sites south of Tripoli, such as the dams and the Al Haḑabah Sewage Treatment Plant.

Due to security conditions, the team was unable to survey some important sites that had been included in previous years. Nevertheless, the results were encouraging, with good bird counts in the surveyed areas, except for Wadi Zaret dam, which was dry this year, affecting the number of birds recorded there.

The team extends its gratitude to all participants who contributed to the success of this survey despite the difficult conditions in the country. Special thanks are also due to the Mediterranean Waterbirds Network for their continuous support and encouragement, which ensures the continuation of this scientific and environmental program.

The Libyan Society for Birds participated in a workshop on project grant monitoring in Libya, held in Zuwara.

On Monday, 7 October 2019, the Libyan Society for Birds participated in a workshop on grant monitoring in Libya, held in Zuwara. The workshop was organized by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) in collaboration with Bado Society for the protection of marine and terrestrial life and the General Environmental Authority.

The Society extends its sincere thanks to the management and members of Bado Society for their outstanding efforts in organizing and successfully hosting this workshop.

Field Visit of the Libyan Society for Birds to the Al Haḑabah Sewage Treatment Plant.

As part of the Libyan Society for Birds’ activities in monitoring and studying birds and their habitats, a team from the Society conducted a field visit to the Al Haḑabah Sewage Treatment Plant on Saturday, 28 September 2019.

During the visit, several species of waterbirds inhabiting the area were recorded.

The Society extends its sincere thanks to the team for their dedicated efforts in serving birds and protecting their habitats in Libya.

Celebration of the Launch of Environmental Projects for the Farwa Area.

With the grace and guidance of God, a celebration was held on Tuesday, 17 September 2019, in the city of Farwa to mark the launch of environmental projects dedicated to the Farwa area, funded by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF).

These projects were proposed by the Libyan Society for Birds, the Libyan Society of Artisanal Fishery Friends, and the Bado Society for the protection of marine and terrestrial life. The event was organized under the auspices of the Municipal Council of Zuwara and the Steering Council of Abu Kammash.

The ceremony was attended by the CEPF representative in North Africa, a delegate from the General Authority for Environment, the Chairman of the General Commission for Civil Society Organizations, the Executive Office Director of the Commission, the Zwara Office Director, as well as a number of distinguished figures and representatives of governmental institutions and local NGOs from Zuwara.

The organizing associations extend their sincere gratitude to all who contributed to the success of this event, with special thanks to the members of the three participating associations and to the youth of the Bado Society for their outstanding dedication and active role in this occasion.

winter Waterbird Census (IWC) in Libya – 2019.

As part of its activities in monitoring and documenting waterbirds and their habitats, the Libyan Society for Birds launched the winter Waterbird Census in Libya during January 2019, in cooperation with the General Authority for Environment and its regional branches, with the participation of several local environmental associations.

The census covered a number of wetlands and coastal areas across Libya, aiming to record the species and numbers of waterbirds wintering in the country, in addition to monitoring the status of the natural habitats upon which these birds depend.

The Society extends its appreciation to all participating teams for their dedicated efforts in ensuring the success of this national program, which forms part of the International Waterbird Census (IWC).

A celebration of World Wetlands Day.

In support of wetlands as important and sensitive natural habitats that provide essential services to various living organisms, especially humans, a celebration of World Wetlands Day was held on Wednesday, 7 February 2018 (the day is officially observed on 2 February each year).

The event took place in the Department of Zoology Hall, Faculty of Science – University of Tripoli, organized in collaboration with the Department of Zoology, the Libyan Society for Birds, and the Libyan Wildlife Trust. The program included an opening speech introducing the occasion, followed by a scientific lecture on wetlands and the threats they face, presented by Mr. Mokhtar Moussa.

On the sidelines of the celebration, a prominent environmental figure was honored: the late Engineer Wagih Basha Imam, former president of the Libyan Society for Birds, in recognition of his lifelong contributions to bird protection, attended by his family.

Additionally, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Libyan Society for Birds and the Libyan Wildlife Trust to establish a bird observatory named after Engineer Wagih Basha Imam, honoring his major contributions to bird conservation throughout his life.

The event concluded with thanks extended to guests from the General Environmental Authority, university faculty members from the departments of botany and zoology, representatives of civil society organizations, and the family of the late Engineer Imam. Special appreciation was given to the students of the Department of Zoology and the organizing committee for their efforts in making the event a success.

Libya Winter Waterbird Census Program – 2018.

On 23 January 2018, the Libya Winter Waterbird Census continued, covering several wetland sites in Tripoli. The survey included the Al Haḑabah Sewage Treatment Plant and the Qergarish coastline, where a good diversity of bird species and numbers was recorded.

This activity is part of Libya’s participation in the International Waterbird Census (IWC), which aims to monitor the status of waterbirds and protect their natural habitats in the country.

Libya Winter Waterbird Census Program – 2018.

The Zwarah region witnessed a productive and remarkable period from 17 to 19 January 2018 as part of the Winter Waterbird Census program.

The census activities were carried out in collaboration with the Libyan Society for Birds, Bado Society for the protection of marine and terrestrial life, and the General Environmental Authority.

Field surveys covered several wetlands in Zwarah, the Farwa complex, and the Abu Kamash area, yielding important data on waterbird populations.

The program organizers extend their sincere thanks to the Bado Society team for their excellent organization and outstanding enthusiasm for birds and their protection.

Libya Winter Waterbird Census Program – 2018.

On Sunday, 14 January 2018, the third day of the Libya Winter Waterbird Census took place, conducted by a joint team from the Libyan Society for Birds, the Nature Protection Department of the General Environmental Authority, and its regional branches in Misrata and Sirte.

The census activities began on Thursday, 11 January 2018, covering wetland sites in Misrata and later continuing in the Sirte area. The team showed great enthusiasm in carrying out this important environmental mission.

The Society extends its sincere thanks to all participants for their efforts, with special appreciation to Libyan Najma Company for hosting the team during their work in the Misrata and Al-Washka areas.

Field Trip Organized by the Libyan Society for Birds to Introduce Birds and Their Natural Habitats.

On Saturday, 9 December 2017, the Libyan Society for Birds participated in a field trip organized by the Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science – University of Tripoli. This activity was part of the Society’s efforts to introduce birds and their natural habitats and to raise environmental awareness about the importance of protecting birds and their ecosystems.
