Winter Waterbird Census in Libya – 2020.

The Winter Migratory Waterbird Census in Libya commenced on Thursday, 9 January 2020, under the supervision of the Libyan Society for Birds, in collaboration with the General Environmental Authority and the Bado Society for the protection of marine and terrestrial life in Zuwara. This year’s survey covered most areas from Abokammash in the west to Wadi Kaam Dam in the east, excluding certain sites south of Tripoli, such as the dams and the Al Haḑabah Sewage Treatment Plant.

Due to security conditions, the team was unable to survey some important sites that had been included in previous years. Nevertheless, the results were encouraging, with good bird counts in the surveyed areas, except for Wadi Zaret dam, which was dry this year, affecting the number of birds recorded there.

The team extends its gratitude to all participants who contributed to the success of this survey despite the difficult conditions in the country. Special thanks are also due to the Mediterranean Waterbirds Network for their continuous support and encouragement, which ensures the continuation of this scientific and environmental program.
